The rancheros lived on land given to them by the King of Spain. The land was called a rancho.

Rancheros built houses of adobe bricks. They raised cattle, sheep, and horses.

The richest ranchero was Juan Bautista Alvarado. His rancho covered all the land in the Escondido area.
